Album Review: 'Every Room' - Frames

Imagine if Hilary Duff had gone emo during the halcyon days of Lizzie McGuire.

‘Why Not’ would probably have a chugging breakdown. ‘So Yesterday’ would become a savage ode to hating your hometown, while ‘coming Clean’ would go on to become a Midwestern breakup classic, complete with afive-minute guitar solo.

It’s how Know Hope Records describes the sound of Frames, the Virginia-based band fronted by Sarah Phung since 2019 - before Olivia Rodrigo, Meet Me @ The Altar and MGK led the pop punk revival, before the world went to complete shit.

Originally a solo act, Frames have since expanded into a four-piece, with Carter Wahl on guitar, Blake Layman on bass and Alex Wilson on drums. They work wonderfully in tandem with Phung, helping to expand on the hazy nostalgia of her 2019 EP Cursed on Frames' full-length debut, Every Room, a record for those who miss ‘early aughts culture, watching music videos after school or on Yahoo, wearing skinny jeans and canvas shoes without socks, Hilary Duff, kids who dreamed of playing Warped Tour, etc,’

Like any good emo or pop punk record, there’s bittersweet longing and raw confessional lyrics, the kind ripped straight from the pages of a worn-out journal.

Opener ‘Lightweight’ is just that, floating atop a steady winding backbeat as Phung finds herself gripped by romantic obsession. ‘Brewery,’ in stark contrast, sees a relationship come to an amicable end, a light and breezy track reminiscent ofMichelle Branch onThe Spirit Room (which celebrated its 20th anniversary not too long ago).

‘Cold Hard Criminal’ recalls early Paramore right down to the raspy vocals and steely determination as the singer/guitarist plots her escape from a toxic relationship and/or her hometown (as is emo tradition). Recent single ‘Tabletop’ aches withurgencyas the singer/vocalist wonders why ‘you said all the things that you said, with a heavy heart or an empty chest.’

Standout‘Ryan’ is a brooding, hopeless ode to The OC character of the same name, a bold choice on Phung’s part since most emo girls for the nerdy, Death Cab for Cutie-lovin' Seth Cohen. But she could be the one to change him -It’s not your fault you came from a life/So rough that it made you sharp as a knife/But you didn’t have to be so full of rage/And yet, I still would succumb to your blade – even if the relationship is, y’know, parasocial at best...

‘Two Phones,’ meanwhile, is deceptively breezy as Phung admits ‘’I’m done being a stranger to myself/Maybe I’ll start reaching out for help.’ Her anxieties roll over into the harrowing ‘Body Kicks,’ which is partly based on Phung’s time working as a stripper, feeling numb to the shiny floors, the cold, hard gazes of club patrons, and the sickly glow of neon as she dances.

The record soon ends with the wintry ache of ‘This Year,’ bookending ‘Last Year’ from the Cursed EP.

Featuring Can’t Swim’s Chris LoPorto, Phung channels Let Go-era Avril as the song’s melody restlessly unravels round her before reaching a glorious crescendo. It also contains one of the most beautifully devastating lines on the record (‘You’re sticking needles in a cactus, I’m picking thorns out of my skin’), encapsulating allits fear, confusion and loneliness.

Phung recently told Ones to Watch that she misses the days of Ashlee Simpson, Paramore, Hey Monday and Avril Lavigne. So do I, so very, very much.

Every Room is an unapologetic love letter to 2000s emo and post-rock, as well as a seamless body of work, with elements of folk pop and shoegaze helping to shape its sprawling intimacy.

But while there’s plenty of youthful angst, this isn't a record about heartbreak. Rather, it’s a restless coming of age, at times hopeful and even starry-eyed. Yet Phung throws herself willingly into the emotional chaos in order to try and make sense of it, no matter how much it hurts.

‘I hope that listeners embrace the confusion and frustration that I delve into with my songs,’ Phung told Atwood Magazine, ‘and learn to sit through the discomfort and realize that that’s the only way through to the other side.’

No doubt they will...

On bodies and time

There is a 50-60 year gap between my age and those with whom I spend my time at Chateau Lescure. My hosts are 85 and 68 years old respectively, and our gatherings with their friends balance the median between them to a ripe 75.

I do not mind the valley of time between us; in fact, I cherish it. I do not know what to attribute to their voracity for life (magic herb? Everlasting spring at the base of a tree?), but my hosts and their friends seem to command time backwards. They swim endlessly in the lake, bike at breakneck speed down mountains, and canoe standing up. It is as if their golden years never knew how to dull.

Michel enjoys rediscovering medieval trails and organizing group hikes along them. On these hikes, I find myself walking in tandem with another person for stretches of time that invite personal questions: I ask fellow hikers about the first thud of falling in love. What it was like when they knew which career made their heart flutter. How they experienced war. What it was like to hold their first grandchild.

Their eyes always search. Perhaps it takes time to sift through years and years of living. I imagine there is a space in our minds which store the moments worth passing on to prying 20-something year olds. When asked, people usually have something beautiful to share.

I love to hear how a person filled the time between the benchmarks of growing older - those liminal stretches of insignificance that comprise a lifetime. I have hiked alongside a retired French professor at Oxford, an economic analyst for the World Bank, and a restorer of historic wallpaper. I have been the listening ear to a woman who described how Wuthering Heights flung her medical degree offcourse for a career in English literature. At a dinner party, I sat beside a mathematics professor at the University of Chicago who found God in the lines of an equation.

Among the older generations I meet, there is an inescapable awareness of time's steady ticking. One Sunday, we sit around the dinner table with some of my host's friends. Although the meal brims with life and laughter, we dine with arthitis, deafness, memory loss, a brain tumor, and cancer. We treat one another with care as we pass the wine, advice, and braised chicken around the table. We include and we adjust according to each person's ability. This is what must be done for us all to have a seat at the table.

Living here has been an exercise in what I can anticipate about aging and what I cannot. There are the facets of time's passage that are obvious: the paths that each smile will etch around my mouth and eyes, each frown and moment of confusion stored between my eyebrows in sweeping valleys. Freckles will dot my shoulders like constellations. Perhaps stretch marks from motherhood will reach across my belly, hoping to connect to the other side.

It's not that I am afraid of my body's evolution.

I am afraid of forgetting the familiar flight of my fingers on a piano. To laugh with my sister. To walk miles and miles without direction. To lift a child.

Perhaps, one day, my memories will evaporate. I think I am afraid of that most.

Among my elderly friends, I feel my youth more acutely. I appreciate the flexibility of my body, the ease of my tendons, knees, and the dexterity of my fingers unhindered by pain and arthritis. I hear what they can no longer: the telephone ringing inside while we are in the garden, the calls for the other spouse from one side of the house to the other. I remind them of their daily pills at breakfast and carry our basket at the farmer's market, heavy with future meals.

I notice small hills forming at the peaks of my arms, straining from lifting buckets of water each morning and afternoon to sheep and chickens. I now fly up the winding stairs of the tower which once left me panting. I feel happy in my skin.

Concurrently, I am discovering how fragile bodies are: my arms, scratched each evening from wading into rose thorns. The tension stored in my back from hunching over weeds. The nettles which send my skin on fire at the briefest touch.

I am learning about the strengths, flexibility, and fragility of my mind, as well. I notice how my mental wellbeing changes with the influx of fresh vegetables, sunshine, and movement. I observe the simultaneous loneliness of solo travel as well as the need for isolation and learning how to balance the two. I test the limits of my anxiety and forgive myself if the anxiety wins out.

A lot of uninterrupted time passes in my mind here, which is not always a peaceful place to rest. I frequently retreat to the nearby creek to read or skip stones. Sometimes, I sit by a window at the top of the tower and simply hide.

Sophie and Michel's 2 1/2 year old granddaughter, Ellen, arrived a few days ago. Knowing the fragility of my own body makes me aware of hers; perhaps she, too, may wander into nettles and graze rose thorns.

She seems fearless, however; while cautious at first, she now wraps her arms around my legs in a tight hug. We even water the garden together and take turns counting the seconds that it takes to quench the thirst of a stalk of corn.

One, deux, three, quatre, five...

After spending so much time with people a century older than her, her mind's plasticity charms me. The constant changeability of the world enchants her: the flickering of my hands over my face reveals a syncopated raising and lowering of my mouth's corners. Smile, frown, smile, frown. Cue Ellen's ecstatic giggling.

Like Ellen, the world's changeability delights me, too. The beans I planted weeks ago now waver in green, young stems. The rose buds I pruned now blossom and lettuce falls open in concentric circles.

I am filling time here with moments I hope my eyes will search for when I am older, distilled into wisdom to pass onto a curious 20-something year old. Maybe I will be able to recollect the taste of sugar cookies with electrifying sherbert made from the red currants I collected. The nightly task of herding the chickens to their coop to sleep. The solo ten-mile hike when I slurped apricots in the grass overlooking volcanic mountains. The way Ellen spins when I play piano for her and the taste of fresh bread at breakfast. I'll fix these memories in the space I think they are stored and hope that time lets me fall in love with them again.

coach and papa thorne seem like robbie’s gay dads in this scene and i’m lving for it

harold baer

Runway Stunts, Condoms, Tom Ford Throwbacks: Inside Milan Fashion WeekAnother week of Milan shows have wrapped, where we saw the sophomore runway outings of Maximilian Davis at Ferragamo, Rhuigi Villaseñor at Bally, Marco de Vincenzo at Etro and Filippo Grazioli at Missoni, each designer crystalizing their vision for their respective heritage houses. Gucci's show was designed by an in-house team as we await the new designer's debut in September. And Versace won't show until March in Los Angeles just before the Oscars. Below, a recap of the biggest standouts of Milan Fashion Week.Avavav Had Clothes Falling Apart on the RunwayDesigner Beate Karlsson has been using her Avavav shows as commentary on fashion and its relationship with wealth, fakeness and failure. After last season's stunt, where models stumbled and fell down the runway on purpose, her sophomore Milan runway outing has the clothes literally tearing and coming apart the model's body as a commentary on fashion's seriousness and ideas around bad quality and shame."It’s a way of showing authenticity and strength," Karlsson says. "I wanted to create a moment of embarrassment and shame to see if it can coexist with, or even generate luxury."BTS' RM Makes Surprise Front Row Cameo at Bottega VenetaBTS' leader RM made a surprise front row appearance at the Bottega Veneta show, sitting next to Kelela in an understated look from the brand's Spring 2023 show. Could he be the Italian label's next brand ambassador from the K-pop group as its members continue to go solo? (Dior, Louis Vuitton and Valentino have each signed on Jimin, J-Hope and Suga, respectively.) Models Go Crowd-Surfing at SunneiSunnei sure loves a good ol' fashion stunt. After having twins walk its last show (where one sibling came out from the audience with the other emerging from backstage), the brand had it models (who were its employees) walk an elevated platform runway, turn their back and drop into the audience concert-style as they crowd-surfed away. The show notes said of the performance: "Each season, the aim is to forge an interaction between [Sunnei designers] Loris Messina and Simone Rizzo, guests, models and location."Gucci Brought Back Those Tom Ford-Era Horsebit BagsWith its new creative director not presenting her first collection until September, Gucci's Fall 2023 was entrusted to their in-house studio team. This season they sent out looks inspired by several chapters of the brand's history, with plenty of Tom Ford-isms and a few of Alessandro Michele's codes mixed in between. Speaking of Tom Ford, the horsebit handbags he introduced for the brand in 2003 got the oversized update here in bold colors with curvy corners. Some styles also come with built-in gloves for your fingers.GCDS Made Shows That Look Like ClawsWhile a lot of the attention at the GCDS show was directed at VIPs like Dua Lipa (and Bella Thorne, and Dixie D'Amelio, and Aron Piper), the accessories Guiliano Calza showed on the runway deserved just as much buzz. There were metallic chrome boots, bags with telephone-shaped handles and cat-shaped crystal balls. But the standouts by far were the heel-less platform shoes, including one in the shape of a paw with claws sticking out. "The collection relies on the face-off of the sweet and the darkly seductive, with accessories blowing the claws of domestic felines to human proportions, turning them into sensual weapons," the show notes said of the shows. Purr!Diesel Teamed Up With Durex CondomsThe show invite to Diesel's Fall 2023 show featured a co-branded condom with Durex, hinting at a possible collab to come, and sure enough, the set featured a giant pile of boxed condoms in the middle of the space — 200,000 to be exact. (Some of the looks on the runway also featured Durex logos.)The brand said an additional 300,000 Durex condoms would be handed out for free in April in Diesel stores globally. “Sex positivity is something amazingm" Dieswel's Glenn Martens said. "We like to play at Diesel, and we are serious about it. Have fun, respect each other, be safe. For Sucsexful Living!” Tomo Koizumi Made His Milan Fashion Week DebutJapanese wunderkind Tomo Koizumi, known for his exaggerated tulle confections, made his Milan Fashion Week debut with a collection that showed off his knack for manipulating tulle into colorful, couture gowns. Koizumi is the latest emerging designer to show at Milan thanks to Dolce & Gabbana's program, following past names like Miss Sohee and Matty Bovan. He even used some of the brand's fabrics from past Alta Moda collections and reworked them into his signature tulle looks. https://www.papermag.com/milan-fashion-week-fall-2023-2659472848.html

Pure troppo, a mio avviso.

1. Summer Breeze, di Catherine Anderson (inedito in italiano)

https://amzn.to/3pqYwyC

2. Caro nemico (My Dearest Enemy) di Connie Brockway

https://amzn.to/3djD24o

Perciò per me è molto romantico.

State pronti a commuovervi, ma in modo composto.

4. Abbandonarsi al desiderio (The Lover) di Robin Schone

https://amzn.to/3apDa0h

Molto verace.

5. Amare un libertino (When He Was Wicked) di Julia Quinn

https://amzn.to/3pr0m2u

6. Adorabile sconosciuto (The Perfect Stranger) di Anne Gracie

https://amzn.to/3b9nf5i

No, ditemelo. Tutte a lei? Struggimento a go go.

7. Dietro la maschera (Tapestry) di Karen Ranney

https://amzn.to/2ZjILin

9. The shadow and the star (inedito in italiano) Laura Kinsale

10. The Bridal Veil (inedito in italiano) di Alexis Harrington

Falcon and the Winter Soldier

What If…?

I Am Groot

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Elenco de Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Christine Palmer.

Chiwetel Ejiofor como Mordo

Xochitl Gomez como América Chávez

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness será una película con tintes de horror dirigida por Sam Raimi y se ha confirmado que tendrá conexión con WandaVision y con la tercera entrega de Spider-Man (reafirmando los rumores sobre el Spider-Verso).

Thor: Love and Thunder

Ant-Man and the Wasp

Wrestler of the Year 2017 | Lufisto

Anytime you are thinking of a group of women who had a great year in the world of independent wrestling if Lufisto doesn’t come to mind, you are doing it wrong. She has been wrestling for 20 years and impresses crowds every time she steps into a ring.

2017 started with a bang as Lufisto defeated Mercedes Martinez and Allysin Kay in a triple threat match on Shine 40 to win the vacant Shine Championship. Shine 40 was supposed to have Lufisto challenging then-champion Ivelisse. However, when Ivelisse was forced to vacate the title, the main event was changed to the triple threat. Lufisto has defended the championship on a number of occasions at Shine against Ivelisse, Leva Bates, Allysin Kay, Holidead, and Vanessa Kraven. She has also defended the belt outside of Shine at the WWN Supershow against Toni Storm, at VIP Gold Rush in Texas against Machiko, at ZXW2 in Quebec against Kath Von Goth, and at two ACW Shows against Holidead and Trixie Tash. As of this writing, Lufisto is approaching day 350 with the belt. This makes her the longest reigning Shine Champion by a long shot, Ivelisse’s first reign is the second longest at just shy of 300 days.

Shine is not the only place that Lufisto has seen success this year. She has spent a lot of time in Beyond Wrestling. In January, Lufisto formed Team PAWG with fellow hard hitter Jordynne Grace. The pair has picked up wins against Davienne & Mistress Belmont and Alexxis & Taeler Hendrix, as well as a number of Beyond’s male tag teams. Based on their success in Beyond, Team PAWG earned a shot at the Sabotage World Tag Team titles and the Tier 1 Tag Team titles. Team PAWG also took part in in the Tag Team Elimination match at Nova Pro’s 11th Dimension as they were part of the losing Team Faye Jackson.

In other promotions, Lufisto has picked up wins against Hudson Envy, Sonya Strong, AIW Owner John Thorne at AIW’s The Next Episode, Leva Bates, and former WWE Women’s Champion Jazz among others. In International Wrestling Cartel, Lufisto defeated Britt Baker in July to win the IWC Women’s Title. She successfully defended the title in August against Katie Arquette in a steel cage match before losing the belt in October back to Britt Baker. She advanced to the final round of the AWS Women’s tournament in May defeating Solo Darling and Renee Michelle before losing to Ruby Raze in the finals. In October, Lufisto defeated Gabby Ortiz, Katred, and Penelope Ford to win the vacant JAPW Women’s Title, a title only previously held by Sara Del Rey and Kimber Lee, both currently employed by WWE.

Lufisto continues to be a staple in SHIMMER competing against Leva Bates, KC Spinelli Solo Darling, Shotzi Blackheart, and Rachel Ellering, winning all but the match against Solo. In the fall, Lufisto joined forces with Hudson Envy to take on Solo Darling & Thunderkitty as well as the Samantha Heights & Brittany Blake. In RISE, Lufisto made her debut at Rise 5 defeating Layne Rosario and defeating Dust at Rise 6 in a barbed wire bat match.

Although she ended the year on the shelf with an injury, 2018 is already promising to be another great year. She has booked a trip to wrestle in Europe with British Empire Wrestling as a part of the International Grand Prix. She will be defending her Shine Championship against the first Shine Champion, Rain who returned at Shine 47 winning the Survival Battle Royal to become the number 1 contender. Lufisto is one of the most veteran women on the United States independent wrestling scene. She is resistant and determined. She is a star.

https://pb-seeker.tumblr.com/tagged/FCH:Female:20s:RedHair

https://pb-seeker.tumblr.com/tagged/FCH:Female:10s:RedHair

https://pb-seeker.tumblr.com/post/136962026527/

NWSL Week 16 preview and fixtures: Chicago Red Stars push for the top of the table

Chicago may have had a shaky start to the season, but heading into the homestretch, the Red Stars are firmly one of the league’s top teams.

In 2015, tasked with writing a preview of Chicago’s upcoming season, I described the Red Stars as “streakier than a window washed with Pledge and a pineapple.” This is both terrible cleaning advice — pineapples are inherently messy — and a waste of perfectly good fruit. It is also not entirely inaccurate.

Inconsistent has always been Chicago’s style, from the early NWSL days when the team could never get its act together long enough to crack the top four, to the beginning of this season, when Rory Dames was rolling out formations and lineups by, apparently, putting tiny versions of each player into one of those red cups you use for Yahtzee, giving the thing a good shake and then just going with whatever rolled out onto the table.

The “streakier than a window washed with a pineapple…” thing was, specifically, a reference to Chicago’s 2014 season. Then, the Red Stars made a habit of following up month-long winning streaks with winless ones at least the same length, some kind of strange consistency wrapped up in the opposite. In those days, Chicago had the potential to be a top four team, but whatever climb they’d make towards a postseason berth would always be undone just as quickly. In 2014, Chicago missed out on the playoffs thanks only to tiebreakers, and a lot of questions about how different things could have been if they’d followed up an unbeaten May with something other than a winless June.

The following season, it seemed like Chicago had, maybe, solved the consistency problem. Chicago, thanks in large part to a very strong draft, lost just three times in 2015, and for the first time in the team’s NWSL history, the Red Stars were in the playoffs. By 2016, a little of that old shakiness had started to creep back in, but still, it was enough for a third place finish — the club’s best-ever — and another trip to the postseason. There, at least, Chicago has been totally consistent: two semifinal appearances, two losses. Small [non]victories, I guess.

The way Chicago started this season felt something like a throwback to those more inconsistent times. The Red Stars lost twice in the first four games. Since then though, Chicago’s lost just once more, 2-1 to the Reign, in late June.

However inconsistent Chicago’s results were in those games, at least it made some kind of sense; this is who the Red Stars are. What the team was doing on the the field was another story though, and it was a straight up, True Detective season two-level confusing one. Through the first four games of the season, the Red Stars used four different lineups and formations, like they’d solved the puzzle correctly and made it look like the picture on the box, and then decided they should take it apart and try to solve it again but this time from Pablo Picasso’s point of view.

All of that, combined with a more general ineptitude from every team that wasn't North Carolina, left the Red Stars, and everyone else, playing some strange game of musical chairs in the table. Through the first two months of the season, the Courage was consistently in the top spot, and no other team was doing anything consistent at all.

Now, of course, we’re well past the halfway point, and midway through August, the playoff picture is starting to take on a more definite shape. The bottom of the table has mostly sorted itself out, with Washington stuck in a permanent #tbt to 2013, Kansas City still waiting for the permits to come through on the rebuilding they started following the 2015 season, and Boston just kind of Bostoning around with Rose Lavelle injured. A little further up, Orlando got a big boost from Marta and the Pride’s been slowly climbing into the postseason conversation and Houston, though still not able to consistently compete with the league’s top teams, has started to string together results, too.

Three weeks ago, the top half of the table saw a little shakeup, and though the teams — Chicago, North Carolina, Portland, Seattle, Sky Blue, and now Orlando — are mostly the same, their positions are not. The big story from those games was, of course, the wild 5-4 thing that Seattle and Sky Blue did. And yeah, that game, with nine goals, the Megan Rapinoe vs. Sam Kerr Golden Boot race and the Reign knocking Sky Blue out of the top four with the win, was surely a big and important one in the playoff race, but it wasn't the only thing that happened.

While Rapinoe and Kerr were lighting up the scoreboard in Seattle, the Red Stars were, much more quietly, climbing into first. Of course, part of Chicago’s landing atop the table was because North Carolina’s game against Kansas City was suspended due to weather (it was replayed Thursday night, a 1-0 win for the Courage), but mostly, the Red Stars became the league leaders, at least temporarily, because they quietly turned in another solid performance, beating the Pride 2-1.

Since then, with the Courage playing three games in two weeks and the Red Stars earning only a point in another game against Orlando last weekend, Chicago’s slipped back into second. Still, North Carolina’s lead, one that once seemed insurmountable, is now only four points, and the team that’s right on the Courage’s heels is, of course, the Red Stars.

Beyond ruining Seattle’s perfect season in 2014, Chicago’s never done much that’s particularly flashy. The Red Stars have never made some huge signing from overseas somewhere, or been part of some blockbuster trade. Instead, Chicago’s mostly relied on building from within, drafting smart, and giving young players time to develop within the Red Stars system.

Casey Short, who’s starting to break into the USWNT picture, was originally drafted by Boston, but never played for the Breakers due to injury. Short joined the Red Stars last season, her first in the NWSL, and quickly became an integral part of Chicago’s back line. Julie Ertz, who’s been a mainstay on the USWNT for several years, was drafted by Chicago in 2014 and has spent her entire NWSL career there. So has Christen Press, who joined the Red Stars the same year, after spending two seasons in Sweden.

The story’s the same for just about everyone on Chicago’s roster — players who’ve spent their entire NWSL careers as Red Stars, growing up — and in some cases, like Short’s — getting shots at a spot on the national team because of what they’ve done in Chicago. In fact, of the 11 players that started in the 2-1 win over the Pride, nine have spent their entire NWSL careers in Chicago. It was a similar story in the draw with Orlando a week later, and that was without Press, Ertz and Short, who’d all just returned from the Tournament of Nations.

Perhaps the biggest trade Chicago’s made over the league’s now five year history is also one of the only ones the team’s ever been a part of. But even that, bringing Alyssa Naeher to Chicago, was a move out of necessity more than anything else. Karina LeBlanc, who’d backstopped the Red Stars through the first three seasons of NWSL play, retired following the 2015 season. Though Naeher is now the USWNT’s de facto no. 1 with Hope Solo disappeared and Ashlyn Harris injured, when Chicago traded for her in late 2015, she was still way down on Jill Ellis’ depth chart and known primarily as Boston’s long-suffering but reliable goalkeeper.

Beyond the Naeher move, Chicago’s strategy of building from within is one that’s kind of unique in the NWSL. This is a league that’s still only got ten teams, and that means limited roster spots. With a seemingly endless supply of talent, it’s not unusual for teams to bail on young players who don’t immediately click in the pro ranks. This hasn’t ever been how Chicago’s operated though, in part because the Red Stars have done extremely well with integrating new players into an already established system.

Perhaps the most notable example of this is Chicago’s 2015 draft. Due to the World Cup, Chicago’s rookies suddenly became massive parts of the team, and all of them were up to the task almost immediately. Beyond that, of the seven selections the Chicago made that year, four — Arin Gilliland, Danielle Colaprico, Sofia Huerta and Stephanie McCaffrey — are still integral parts of the Red Stars (McCaffrey was traded to Boston later on draft day, but traded back to Chicago midway through the 2016 season). Huerta scored the tying goal against Orlando last weekend, her fourth of the season.

This year, the Red Stars had just three draft picks, and two of them — Morgan Proffitt and Lauren Kaskie — are on the team (the third, Michele Vasconcelos, announced she was pregnant in February). But Proffitt and Kaskie have both seen only limited time this season. That’s the other part of the equation, and the good problem Chicago’s got. With so little turnover from year to year, there’s just not much room for new players to get consistent minutes right now. Still, Chicago’s kept both Kaskie and Proffiitt around, and though neither has been thrown into things in quite the same sink or swim way the 2015 class was, it’s not impossible to imagine that if either was called on, they wouldn’t be able to fall seamlessly into a bigger role.

On Saturday, Chicago will host Portland, the second meeting of the season between the two teams. The Red Stars and Thorns head into this weekend separated by just a single point, and though North Carolina’s win on Thursday will prevent either from taking the top spot in the table, the Red Stars could move back within a point of the first-place Courage by Sunday night.

The first time Chicago played Portland, it was in Portland in week 3. Then, the Thorns came away with the 1-0 win. But that was also when Chicago was still in one of its fits of inconsistency. Since then, the Red Stars, have lost just once, and that was way back in late June. For however messy and ill-advised it might be to use a pineapple and Pledge for cleaning, for the Red Stars right now, it’s creating all the right kinds of streaks.

december 2016

Note: I was playing catch up on the last few months of 2016, but with this (December 2016), I've reached the current year! Hooray! These monthly wrap-ups are mostly for my own posterity, but I hope you enjoy / take some of the recommendations!

- the television -

Guess what? How I Met Your Mother does not get better in the later seasons. In fact, it gets worse. The decision for the final season to take place over the course of 72 hours will always be unfathomable to me, and I had completely forgotten about the bizarrely racist episode in the middle of season 9, but I finished it. Woo.

As a palate cleanser after HIMYM, I inhaled four short half hour dramedies in record time. The first season of Insecure, seasons one and two of Lovesick (nee. Scrotal Recall), all eight episodes of Easy, and seasons two, three and four of Please Like Me.

Insecure and Easy were both good, but Lovesick and Please Like Me were my favourites of the bunch. Lovesick is a romantic comedy in television format and I watched both seasons in one evening, physically unable to stop myself from clicking 'Next Episode'. I'd watched the first season of Please Like Me months and months ago, but wasn't invested enough to keep going. This time though, I was hooked. Season 4 in particular is some of the best television I've ever seen. Heartbreaking and funny and full of heart. I'm devastated that Josh Thomas has decided that season four was its last, but I respect the creative decision and they are DEFINITELY going out on a high note. Catch up on Netflix!

In December, I also caught up on the latest season (seven) of Shameless, re-watched the first, and sadly only, season of Enlisted, and re-watched the first season of Pitch. (Please, please renew this show, Fox. I needed beefy, bearded Mark-Paul Gosselaar in my life).

- the books -

Fresh off the hype of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, comes Lauren Graham's memoir Talking As Fast As I Can. I didn't enjoy it as much as her novel and found the writing to be more conversational than I am used to, but the anecdotes about her Gilmore Girls and Parenthood years were nice. I think listening to the audiobook might have been the way to go with this one.

This month, I also read a series of largely forgettable YA novels - The Way Back to You by Michelle Andreani and Mindi Scott, Hate List by Jennifer Brown, and I'll Meet You There by Heather Demetrios - before finally finding two novels that I loved. The Hating Game by Sally Thorne is an incredibly endearing and steamy romantic comedy set in the office of a publishing company. It has boatloads of sexual tension, tons of humour and a whole lot of heart. Vicious by V.E. Schwab is out of my general wheelhouse - I'm not a big fantasy reader - but I've now read a few books by Schwab and I really enjoy her style of writing and Vicious was no exception.

- the movies -

In December, I waded through Netflix's movie library and watched Tangled, Other People, The Longest Ride, and How to Train Your Dragon. Other People in particular is heartbreaking and wonderful.

- the music -

Thanks to NPR's Stephen Thompson, I discovered Maren Morris this month. Morris' debut album, Hero, was nominated for the Country Music Awards 'Album of the Year' and her single My Church won the Grammy for 'Best Country Solo Performance'. Morris herself won the CMA for 'New Artist of the Year'. Listen to my favourite song here.

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and end of the year. As always, happy reading, watching and listening!
